About the Explode animation

Your picture fades in over the first few frames, then shatters into small square fragments that fly outward in every direction until nothing is left, and the loop starts again. The Num Particles slider sets how many pieces it breaks into, from a handful of big chunks to ten thousand specks. It suits logos, stickers and reaction memes; a low count looks like a few big chunks flying apart, a high one like dust.

How to make an Explode GIF

  1. Upload an image above (JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP), or start with the sample image that is already loaded.
  2. The Explode animation is selected for you. Adjust the size, speed and total frames, and add filters if you want them.
  3. Click Download Gif. The GIF is made in your browser and saved to your device.

Best Explode settings

  • Num Particles: 800 to 1,500. Fine debris that reads as a real shatter on photos. Drop to 200 to 400 for logos, where chunky pieces keep the shapes recognizable.
  • Frames: 30 to 45. The explosion needs room for its full arc; fewer frames cuts the pieces off mid-flight.
  • Speed: 25 to 35 fps. Explosions read as force at speed and as floating confetti below 20.

Works best on: a subject with clean edges on a transparent background, so the pieces fly apart against nothing.

Watch out: Maxing Num Particles at 10,000 multiplies render time for debris too small to see. Busy full-frame photos turn to noise; crop to the subject first.

How do I make an explosion GIF from a picture?
Upload the picture, keep Explode selected, and click Download Gif. It fades in, then breaks into pieces that fly out of the frame. Num Particles sets how many pieces: 800 to 1,500 reads as a real shatter on photos, 200 to 400 keeps a logo recognizable.
Why do the pieces get cut off before they leave the frame?
The explosion needs 30 to 45 frames for its full arc. With fewer frames the loop restarts mid-flight. Keep Speed at 25 to 35 fps; slower playback turns the blast into floating confetti.
Does the explosion work on a transparent background?
It works best that way. Tick Transparent and use a subject with clean edges, so the pieces fly apart against nothing. Busy full-frame photos turn to noise; crop to the subject first.

Frames

This can help make it look "smoother" (it can also add a lot to your file size). Play around with the slider, you can't permanently break it!

Filters

You can toggle from a selection of filters including, grayscale, pixelation, mirror, ghost trail, motion blur, trippy, invert colors and more!

Background

Upload a background image. For transparent background, click the "Transparent" box below (note: this will override any uploaded background image).

Download

Click the "Download Gif" button.
Note: Download will *not* work within the Instagram or Facebook App, we are looking for a work around. In the meantime you can just visit the website on your phone's browser app (chrome, safari) and download will work.
You can adjust the axis view on desktop by clicking and dragging your mouse on the animation. To zoom in, hover over the animation and use your scroll wheel.
